Citing a spike in homelessness numbers and at least one death, the Federation of Sovereign Indigenous Nations is calling on the Government of Saskatchewan to reverse their recently-changed policies within the Saskatchewan Income Support Program.
The S-I-S replaced the former Saskatchewan Assistance Program on August 31, with many changes to the amount on benefits clients receive and how they are paid out. The changes have led to many vulnerable First Nations people being evicted from their homes due to being in arrears with their rent and utilities. The previous S-A-P paid rent and utility bills directly to landlords while the current S-I-S program directs allocations directly to the clients.
