Canada’s Chief Public Health Officer says over the past month, there have been great strides in slowing the growth of the pandemic. However, Dr. Theresa Tam notes that the rate of decline has slowed somewhat. In the past week across the country, an average of 2,230 new cases were reported daily, which is about half of what was the peak of the fourth wave to date. The peak was over 4,400 cases daily.
The highest rate of outbreaks are in school kids, but they have been smaller than the third wave. In young children the outbreaks usually involve fewer than four cases, which Dr. Tam believes is because of sensitive detection and quick response to control spread. Compared to the third wave, there have been fewer school outbreaks in the 12 to 17 year age group, which Dr. Tam suggests is because of vaccinations. (CJGX)
