They were better 5-on-5 Saturday than they were in Friday’s 2-1 victory in Brandon, but the Saskatoon Blades learned why you can’t take penalties against Winnipeg in a 4-1 loss to the ICE.
The top-ranked team in the weekly C-H-L Top 1o went three-for-seven on the power play Saturday in recording their fifth straight victory and improving their overall record to a W-H-L-best 16-1-0. After a scoreless opening period, the Bridge City Bunch and Winnipeg came through the second frame tied 1-1 with the Blue and Gold killing off a 1:19 stretch of being two men short. But, the Blades kept taking penalties in the third period, leading to consecutive man advantage goals from Cole Muir and Connor McClennon. Saskatoon did get a power play tally of their own from Tristen Robins and out-shot the ICE 23-21, but that wasn’t enough to avoid having a modest two-game winning streak come to an end and the overall record drop to 11-5-1. Matthew Savoie scored the other Winnipeg power play goal and added two assists with Mikey Milne scoring into an empty net. The same teams play Sunday at 5 p.m. with the broadcast on CJWW beginning at 4:30. Following is Les Lazaruk’s post-game show conversation with head coach Brennan Sonne, along with the game summary courtesy the W-H-L…..
