According to a report from the provincial government, there has been progress to improve waste management in Saskatchewan.
One of the accomplishments in this fiscal year was the development of two province-wide waste diversion programs for consumer batteries and core household waste, which helps divert potentially harmful materials from landfills.
Call2Recycle launched in January of this year, where batteries can be collected at all SARCAN depots and other locations, and the program for household hazardous material and domestic pesticides launched in the spring.
In its first year, hazardous waste collection events were scheduled in 35 host municipalities.
The report also says the amount of waste generated in Saskatchewan is on the decline, from 845 kilograms per capita in 2014 to 744 kilograms per capita in 2018.
The numbers come from a Statistics Canada survey published every two years, and the 2020 numbers aren’t available yet.
