The body of a woman has been recovered from the mudslide on Monday morning near Lillooet, British Columbia. BC RCMP say search efforts are continuing. Late yesterday, Search and Rescue personnel were transported by helicopter to the area and the woman’s body was located and extricated. RCMP say the total number of people and vehicles unaccounted for has not been confirmed, however investigators have received two missing persons reports and they believe there may have been other occupied vehicles that were lost in the slide.
The huge amounts of rain and wind in southern BC have meant mudslides, rockslides and flooding. BC Transportation has reported that Highways 1, 7 and 99N are closed, cutting off Vancouver from the rest of the province. The Coquihalla Highway has been washed away in some sections. It’s the road that services most of the traffic in and out of Vancouver.
The Western Standard Online reports widespread evacuations in the Fraser Valley, BC interior, Vancouver Island and over 7,000 people from the community of Merritt. It’s not just the roads, though. There is no rail access to the west coast, meaning no access to one of Canada’s biggest ports. The storm also forced the closure of the Trans Mountain pipeline.
