A new policing team has been established to target gang-related criminal activity coming in to Saskatchewan through trafficking corridors.
Corrections, Policing and Public Safety Minister Christine Tell says the Saskatchewan Trafficking Response Team, also known as STRT, is a specialized intelligence-led enforcement team which will address illegal weapons, drugs and human trafficking.
It is comprised of 30 RCMP officers, six municipal officers, two criminal analysts and three support staff, for a total of 41 new positions.
There will be offices in Lloydminster, Estevan and Swift Current. A news release says these locations were chosen based on their proximity to provincial boundaries and trafficking corridors.
Municipal STRT resources will be based in Prince Albert, Saskatoon and Regina.
The provincial cost is $2.1-million for this fiscal year, and about $6.4-million each year thereafter. None of this funding is coming from other policing initiatives.
