The Regina Police Service released their version of the Sunday evening incident involving a Saskatchewan Roughriders player at a restaurant in the city’s south end following the team’s victory over Calgary in the C-F-L West Semi-Final.
Regina Police say 31-year-old Mariesa Natalia Giovannetti of Regina is charged with assault after officers were called to the Earl’s Restaurant in the 2800 block of 28th Avenue for a report of an assault in progress.
The call said a male and a female were involved and had just left the restaurant. When officers arrived, they were directed to the two specific individuals who were taken into custody without incident.
One of them was Riders’ safety Loucheiz Purifoy, who was detained for the night and released without charge. Purifoy said he raised his voice at a waitress about the long wait for his food.
The 22-year-old waitress alleged she had been struck in the face by the female taken into custody, but did not require medical attention. Police say Purifoy was released once he was calm and sober and wasn’t charged. Giovannetti was released, pending a January 17th date in Provincial Court.
