A news release from the federal government says it is provisioning $40-billion to compensate First Nations children harmed by the underfunding of Child and Family Services and to implement long-term reform, so future generations will never face the same systemic tragedies. A statement from the Minister of Indigenous Services, Patty Hajdu, and the Minister of Crown-Indigenous Relations, Marc Miller, says, “Tragically, no amount of money can reverse the harms experienced by First Nations children or return years lost by separation from their families, communities, and culture. Historic injustices require historic reparations.” This money depends on the government and child welfare advocates reaching an agreement by the end of December deadline.
