The Saskatoon Tribal Council has announced the Wellness Centre in downtown Saskatoon opens tonight (Wed) at 8 o’clock. Tribal Chief Mark Arcand says the green light has been given after all the necessary inspections guaranteeing a safe facility were passed.
He calls the Wellness Centre a temporary solution to the systemic issue of homelessness, with long-term potential to help get people off the streets. Arcand says, “This is an Indigenous-led solution for everyone who needs it. STC is proud to lead by example and help our community.”
The 50-bed temporary homeless shelter at 145 1st Avenue North was expected to open on Monday, but the inspections hadn’t finished yet. The STC has applied to the federal government for a $1.4 million dollar grant to help cover costs.
