A spokesperson for the Humboldt Broncos Tribute Centre hope to have shovels in the ground sometime in 2023 on a new facility. Gregg Sauter says the goal is to raise $35 million dollars for a new building that could be the new home of the Humboldt Broncos hockey team, along with a new tribute centre and a training facility. They are currently in a ‘quiet’ phase of the campaign. Discussions are currently taking place with both local companies and ones that are on the national scale.
When speaking with people across the country, Sauter says one thing they’ve heard people say about the project is that it’s bigger than Humboldt and that it’s bigger than the game of hockey. He adds that the objective of the campaign is to create something positive out of the Broncos’ tragedy. “Not just for Humboldt but even for the nation. What we heard from so many of the family members is that if we can’t create something positive out this tragedy, than that would just be another tragedy.”
In order for the project to be a success, Sauter says they’ll need funding from philanthropic donors, corporate donors and help from the government. He pointed to a number of facilities in Saskatoon that have received funding from all three including the Jim Pattison Children’s Hospital and Merlis Belsher Place.
