The Canadian Red Cross suggests that getting outside can help boost your mood, but we should all be prepared before heading outdoors this winter.
The non-profit organization has four hot tips for cold weather.
The first is to be weather-ready. That means check the forecast and dress like an onion. Start with a base layer and add insulating layers, and don’t forget to cover your neck and head.
The next tip is to practice ice safety. The Red Cross advises to check the ice’s colour. Clear blue is the strongest ice, while grey ice is not safe to stand on. Check with local authorities on ice conditions before venturing out.
The Red Cross urges drivers to adjust their speed to the weather conditions and avoid driving in bad weather whenever possible. Vehicles should also be equipped with an emergency roadside safety kit.
And the fourth tip is to have a backup plan. Put off non-essential outings when the weather is dicey, and much like when you are driving, keep an emergency kit at home with enough supplies to last three days.
