For the first time in almost a month, daily new cases of COVID-19 in Saskatchewan exceeded 100.
Wednesday’s dashboard update on the provincial government website had 105 new cases, along with only 36 recoveries and one new novel coronavirus-related death, leaving 627 active cases. The last time Saskatchewan had more than 100 new cases in a day was 108 on November 26. In addition, the number of Omicron variant cases in the province jumped up to 96 from 82 with 27 confirmed cases and 69 probable cases detected through initial screening. Despite those increased numbers, hospitalized individuals with COVID-19 was down by seven to 91, including 30 infections being treated in an I-C-U. Plus, Tuesday saw 1,897 tests for the virus performed while 1,999 doses of vaccine were administered, 1,030 making the recipient fully immunized.
Highlights
- As of December 22nd, there are 105 new confirmed cases of COVID-19, bringing the total to 82,442 reported cases.
- The new cases are located in the Far North East (2), North West (7), Saskatoon (46), Central West (9), Central East (7), Regina (22), South Central (4), and South East (3) zones and five (5) new cases have pending residence information.
- Three (3) SK residents tested positive out-of-province were added to the case counts in the North East (from December 18 (1)), Saskatoon (from December 19 (1)), and Regina (from December 18 (1)) zones.

- 20,002 cases are from the North area (8,881 North West, 8,268 North Central, 2,853 North East)
- 19,738 cases are from the Saskatoon area
- 16,125 cases are from the Regina area
- 10,380 cases are from the South area (2,206 South West, 3,022 South Central, 5,152 South East)
- 9,400 cases are from the Far North area (4,421 Far North West, 541 Far North Central, 4,438 Far North East)
- 6,243 cases are from the Central area (1,463 Central West, 4,780 Central East)
- 554 cases have pending residence information
- 627 cases are considered active and 80,871 cases are considered recovered.
- Two-fifths (40.0%) of new cases are in the age category of 20 to 39.
- More than one-half (53.9%) of new cases eligible for vaccination (aged 5 years and older) were fully vaccinated.
- As of December 22nd, a total of 91 individuals are hospitalized, including 61 inpatient hospitalizations and 30 ICU hospitalizations. Of the 91 patients, 52 (57.1%) were not fully vaccinated.
- One (1) new death reported today. 944 Saskatchewan residents with COVID-19 have died, with a case fatality rate of 1.1%.
- 1,314,530 COVID-19 tests have been performed in the province. As of December 20, 2021, when other provincial and national numbers are available from PHAC, Saskatchewan’s per capita rate was 1,109,629 tests performed per million. The national rate was 1,335,115 tests performed per million.
- The 7-day average of new COVID-19 case numbers was 68 (5.7 new cases per 100,000).

* As of September 13, 2021, the province of Saskatchewan ceased testing for variant type on all new cases using SNP in order to support overall COVID-19 testing. Whole genome sequencing will continue to identify any emerging variants. Note that, as public health investigations proceed, variant of concern case locations may change due as residence locations are confirmed.
