SaskEnergy is putting the spotlight on carbon monoxide safety this holiday season. Spokesperson, Brian Miller says one of the tips the crown corporation has when it comes to carbon monoxide safety is to have a good working CO detector.

“Those alarms are actually becoming mandatory for all Saskatchewan residences beginning next year (2022), so you have to have one in your residence by July 1st of 2022.”

Low exposure to CO can cause flu-like symptoms, while continued exposure can lead to unconsciousness, loss of muscle control, brain damage or even death. Between 2015 and 2019, 16 deaths were recorded from CO poisoning in Saskatchewan.

Each year in Saskatchewan, emergency personnel respond to approximately 1,300 carbon monoxide related calls.
