The Federation of Sovereign Indigenous Nations says the federal announcement about compensation First Nations children is a step towards reclamation. The news release says, “For decades the Child Welfare system has been plagued by racist and discriminatory practices and policies affecting thousands of children across Canada.
Chief Bobby Cameron says the healing journey begins by keeping First Nations children and youth within our own families and communities.
He notes that discriminatory funding and other racist decisions have led to a massive over representation of First Nations children in the system, all at the hand of a federal child welfare system that should have protected them. Cameron suggests long term reform should include prevention, continued work on the root causes or removal, and ensuring it never happens again.
