In an effort to keep water lines from freezing in this brutally cold weather, a Saskatoon resident suffered an estimated $30,000 in damage to their home from a fire late yesterday afternoon.

Firefighters were called out at 5:00 p.m. to a report of a fire at a mobile home in the 1500 block of Rayner Avenue.

When crews got to the scene in Saskatoon’s Sutherland neighbourhood they saw smoke and flames showing.

Utilities were shut down, the City of Saskatoon was called in to provide sand and gravel at the site because of icy conditions from water freezing as firefighters fought the blaze.

Another fire engine was called in so on duty fire crews could switch out to avoid cold exposure.  The fire was under control at 7:31 p.m.

No one was hurt but the fire investigator determined the cause was accidental when a kerosene heater was placed to close to the exterior of the mobile home to keep the water lines from freezing.
