The Saskatoon Police Service Air Support Unit has posted a video on Twitter which gives a real life example of how easy it is for someone to steal a vehicle when the keys are left inside. The video shows the police plane guiding officers on the ground to an acreage where a vehicle is stolen in 12 seconds and then the suspect drives into oncoming traffic heading in the wrong direction. Police advise not to leave the keys in your car while it warms up, to help avoid situations like this.

Here is a rough transcript of the conversation between the police plane and officers on the ground:
Air Support: Traffic coming traffic coming. There’s traffic coming head on, just missed another car. Still north bound. Still high rate of speed. Tured southbound into a farmyard. A bunch of trees on east side of driveway, pulling up to farmyard.
On the ground: North or south side of the road?
Air Support: South side. He’s out. And he has jumped into another vehicle in the yard. Door still open in that vehicle. You are coming up to the farm right now. Turn to your left. Ya, that’s the one. He’s in a car and he’s gotten into a vehicle in that farmyard and he’s backing out. (graphic shows it took about 12 seconds for him to steal the vehicle). He’s pulling ahead now.
Quiet: alerting RCMP
Air Support: He’s pulling over. UTURN UTURN He’s back southbound on Hwy 11 with the flow of traffic. He’s pulling over and now he’s coming into oncoming traffic.
