The coaches leading the Roughriders on both sides of the ball will be in Saskatchewan a little longer.
The Green and White announced that Defensive Co-ordinator Jason Shivers and Offensive Co-ordinator Jason Maas have signed one-year contract extensions through the 2023 season. They were among a flurry of front-office moves the club revealed Thursday. Shivers enters his third C-F-L season in charge of the defence. It will be Maas’s second season leading the offense. The move brings their contracts in line with General Manager Jeremy O’Day and Head Coach Craig Dickenson, which also expired in 2023. The Riders finished 2021 with a 9-5 record and a second place finish in the West Division. Saskatchewan also announced that Special Teams coach Kent Maugeri has been promoted to Special Teams coordinator, while former Edmonton Elks Special Teams coordinator Kelly Jeffrey will join the staff as the running backs coach. Offensive Line Coach and Run Game Coordinator Stephen Sorrells, Wide Receiver Coach Travis Moore, Linebacker Coach Deion Melvin and Defensive Line Coach Ben Olson continue in their roles. MAAS, SHIVERS AND JONES SIGN EXTENSIONS, RIDERS ANNOUNCE 2022 FOOTBALL OPERATIONS AND COACHING STAFF
The Saskatchewan Roughrider Football Club is pleased to announce Offensive Coordinator Jason Maas, Defensive Coordinator Jason Shivers and Assistant General Manager Paul Jones, have signed extensions with the Club through the 2023 season.
Maas enters his second season at the helm of the Saskatchewan offence, after initially signing in the 2019 off-season. Between playing and coaching, Maas has more than 20 years’ experience in the CFL and has been part of three Grey Cup championships.
After coaching CFL sack leaders AC Leonard and Jonathan Woodard to career years in 2021, Shivers begins his third season as the Club’s defensive coordinator. Shivers initially took on the role in 2019, after four seasons coaching the Roughriders defensive backs.
For 2022, the coaching staff that led the 2021 Roughriders to second place in the West Division, a 9-5 record and the Club’s first playoff win at New Mosaic Stadium remains largely intact:
After seven years with the Roughriders, Coach Kent Maugeri has been promoted to Special Teams Coordinator. Maugeri assisted Dickenson in 2021 as the Special Teams Coach and has been with the Roughriders since 2016. He joined the Club as a Quality Control Coach before coaching the running backs in 2019.
Former U Sports and CFL Coach Kelly Jeffrey joins the staff as Running Backs Coach. Jeffrey was most recently on staff with the Edmonton Elks in 2020 and was the Special Teams Coordinator for the Argos in 2016. Prior to his switch to the professional ranks, he spent ten seasons at Mount Allison, including eight as head coach, and several seasons coaching college ball in the United States.
Offensive Line Coach and Run Game Coordinator Stephen Sorrells, Wide Receiver Coach Travis Moore, Linebacker Coach Deion Melvin and Defensive Line Coach Ben Olson continue in their roles, with a Defensive Backs Coach to be hired at a future date.
Re-joining O’Day in the front office is Assistant General Manager Paul Jones, who has signed a contract extension through the 2023 season. Widely regarded as one of the best personnel men in the CFL, 2022 will be Jones fourth year with the Saskatchewan Roughriders and the 34th in a long and successful CFL career that includes five Grey Cup Championships.
After joining the Club in 2019, Kyle Carson has been promoted to Assistant General Manager. Carson has played a pivotal role in football operations, assessing and acquiring talent and working closely with Paul Jones on all personnel matters. Prior to coming to Saskatchewan, Carson began his football operations career with Calgary Stampeders as an intern in 2012, working his way up to Scout and CFL Draft Coordinator. Carson is a two-time Grey Cup Champion.
Jordan Greenly, formerly the Football Operations Coordinator, is now the Manager of Football Operations, Nick Bowley takes on a new role as Manager of Video and Analytics and Chase Pelletier joins the Riders as the new Football Operations Coordinator.
Manager of Equipment Gordon Gilroy, Head Athletic Therapist Ryan Raftis, and Strength and Conditioning Trainer Clinton Spencer, alongside their staff, also remain with the Club.
