A new four week challenge from Scouts Canada is now online. Claim the Flame will challenge younger Canadians from the ages of 5 to 26 to get outdoors and be active this winter.
Youth Program Specialist with Scouts Canada, Siobhan Ward says the first set of challenges will have to do with sports and physical activities.
“So those are things like, you know trying out new winter sports but also things like taking existing summer sports like volleyball, ultimate frisbee, anything like that and trying it in the winter, putting a winter twist on it and seeing how it works.”
Canadian families who are not in Scouting may also join in the fun. Ward hopes more younger Canadians get involved with Scouting and hopes the challenge will help entice some to do so, although she realizes Scouts isn’t for everyone.
“Ultimately, we’d love to have more young people join Scouting, we know the programs we offer are really crucial, especially right now in the pandemic, getting kids outside, getting them to socialize with kids their own age outside of school or outside of a virtual setting, team building, leadership, problem solving, but we recognize it may not be for everyone and that’s why we want to make sure the challenges are accessible to families across the country.”
Ward says this isn’t the first time Scouts Canada has offered a similar program. Last spring a challenge was offered that saw participants take part in outdoor summer skills with activities such as camping and hiking.
