Women at three care homes in Saskatoon will be receiving Valentine’s Day packages thanks to the city’s Sikh community.

Every year, the World Sikh Organization of Canada and Sikhs across Canada mark Valentine’s Day by delivering baked goods, Valentine’s cards, chocolate and personal care items to women’s shelters across the country, with the event being a little bit different in Saskatoon with those at care homes receiving the packages.

Project Lead, Deepinder Kaur says the program started back in 2012. “It’s there to raise awareness about violence against women, and now this campaign has spread globally and in Canada across cities like Montreal, Ottawa, Toronto, Winnipeg, Regina, Saskatoon.”

As of last week, Kaur says they had 120 packages already made and ready to go, however they’re hoping to put together a few more with some last minute shopping.

The initiative is part of the One Billion Rising movement which began as a call to action based on the statistic that one in three women will be assaulted during her lifetime.
