SGI says, “676 drivers slid into the new year a little too quickly.” The January Traffic Safety Spotlight for the Crown Corporation and police across the province was intersection safety. From SGI’s report, 290 drivers disobeyed stop signs, 200 drivers failed to stop at a red light, and 186 drivers received tickets for various other intersection violation.
Spokesperson Heather Hubic says some of the more common causes of accidents at intersections are failure to yield, driver inattention, road conditions and following too closely, which she notes are all preventable collisions.
There were also over 2,900 tickets handed out for aggressive driving and speeding. In more positive news, there were 267 impaired driving offences, which is the lowest number reported since February of 2019. February’s Traffic Safety Spotlight is seatbelt safety.
