Saskatoon Police say the reason for the large police presence on 22nd Street West and Avenue U on Wednesday afternoon was an officer-involved shooting, which happened just before noon Wednesday.

Around 11:35 a.m., police received a report of an armed man at a home in the 200 block of Avenue L South. The caller said there had been a physical altercation at the door to the home before the man fled on foot with a handgun and machete.

Police report that officers found the suspect and there was a confrontation, which resulted in police firing several shots. The 35 year old man received a non-life threatening injury and was transported to hospital.

The Police Service immediately requested the investigation into this shooting be led by the Regina Police Service. The Province will also be assigning two independent investigative observers.
