A nearby elementary school was put into hold and secure mode and it’s alleged police officers were assaulted in what began as Canora RCMP responding to a possible impaired driver in an SUV on Highway 9 just before 1:30 Wednesday afternoon.
About 90 minutes later, an officer with Yorkton Combined Traffic Services located a vehicle matching the description. The officer stopped the vehicle and reported that the man was showing signs of impairment. The officer told the driver he was under arrest and while attempting to handcuff him, it’s alleged the man assaulted and attempted to disarm the officer.
Canora RCMP arrived police say the man continued to threaten and assault officers, even after a conducted energy weapon was deployed. During this arrest is when the nearby school was put into its hold and secure mode.
With the assistance of six police officers and several Town Canora employees, the scene was secured and the man was taken into custody. Thirty-two year old Kellan Armstrong of Preeceville is facing multiple charges including two counts of assaulting a police officer, and one count of disarming a police officer, driving while impaired and uttering threats.
