President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, addressed the UN Security Council today, stating that Russia is “launching a false campaign to conceal their guilt in the mass killing of civilians in Mariupol”. Ukraine has urged the international community to issue fresh sanctions against Moscow.
He called the Russians war criminals and says they killed families, raped women in front of their children and left Ukraine filled with mass graves. Zelenskyy told the UN Security Council that Article 1 Chapter 1 of the UN Charter states that the purpose of the UN is to maintain peace and make sure peace is adhered to, which Ukraine’s President believes has been violated. He notes that Russia is a member of the UN Security Council.
This was Zelenskyy’s first speech to the Security Council since the invasion began.
