Family members, friends, police officers and community members came together Friday as the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls awareness reached Saskatoon.

Lindsey Bishop, the sister of Meghan Gallagher who hasn’t been seen since September of 2020 at west-side convenience store on Diefenbaker Drive and Krista Fox, the aunt of Ashley Morin who was last seen in North Battleford in 2018 are the women behind the walk.

The two were joined by a crowd of around 30 people as they made their way down Idylwyld Drive to the Saskatoon Indian and Metis Friendship Centre.

Bishop and Fox are expected to finish their journey in St. John’s in December after starting in BC back in mid-February.

On the journey so far, Bishop said “The walk so far has been a bit of a rollercoaster of emotions. The amount of people affected by missing and murdered Indigenous people is staggering, and their stories are heartbreaking. On the other side of that though, you see the strength and resilience of our people to continue to fight for their voices to be heard.”

More events are planned for Saturday with Mayor Charlie Clark hanging a red dress in his office. At three in the afternoon, the Gallagher family will be gathering in Kinsmen Park to celebrate Megan’s birthday. Families and supporters are invited to attend.

Bishop and Fox will be back on the road Tuesday when they resume their trek south of the city on Highway 11.
