On the Easter weekend the Combined Traffic Services Saskatchewan officers in the province charged 35 drivers with exceeding 60 kilometres per hour when passing an emergency vehicle with the lights on. It is the law in Saskatchewan to reduce your speed, in all lanes, to 60 when passing emergency vehicles with lights flashing which includes tow trucks.
Tow trucks use blue and amber lights as do snowplows and sanding trucks.
Just prior to the long weekend, SGI announced that the provincial government had amended The Vehicle Equipment Regulations to allow more emergency vehicles to add blue flashing lights which would impact ambulances and fire fighting vehicles, and emergency vehicles that have been designated by a municipality or the Highway Traffic Board to be used in response to an emergency.
You will probably see a fair amount of blue and amber lights today in the wake of the snow which fell late yesterday afternoon and overnight in some parts of Saskatchewan. Sticky, slushy, ice covered, snow covered are all descriptors of the road conditions on the freeway and the highways in central Saskatchewan.
This morning travel is not recommended on some highways in the province. You can find a link to the Highway Hotline right here at cjwwradio.com.
Meanwhile, the City of Saskatoon is encouraging drivers and pedestrians to use caution on streets and sidewalks.
Mixed precipitation, blowing snow and dropping temperatures have created hazardous driving conditions Wednesday morning. City crews including ten sanders worked overnight applying de-icing materials and those efforts will continue today.
