The City of Saskatoon is looking to enter into a partnership with the YMCA when it comes to a new leisure centre on the city’s east side. The City’s planning and development committee on Monday endorsed a plan that would see the Y operate and manage a new leisure centre in the Holmwood Sector which is home to Brighton.
Other cities across the country have entered similar partnerships with their local YMCA including Calgary, Lethbridge, Kelowna, Red Deer and Chilliwack. Andrew Roberts, Director of Recreation and Community Development with the City of Saskatoon says the facility would accept both YMCA memberships and City leisure passes.
There’s also the possibility the new proposed leisure centre could anchor two high schools, similar to what was seen back in 2008 with the construction of the Shaw Centre which is connected to both Tommy Douglas Collegiate and Bethlehem Catholic High School. No provincial capital has been allocated to the new schools at this time. The plan is to have the leisure centre up and running in 2028. Under the proposed plan, the leisure centre would be home to a pool and fitness gym.
City Council will have to sign off for final approval.
