Alberta’s Premier has announced he is stepping down. Jason Kenney garnered 51.4 per cent of the vote in a review of his leadership from members of the United Conservative Party, but Kenney says it’s not enough for him to stay on as leader, so the race for a new United Conservative Party leader begins. He said Wednesday night, “”While 51 per cent of the vote passes the constitutional threshold of a majority, it clearly is not adequate support to continue on as leader.” The UCP caucus is meeting this morning (Thurs) in Calgary.
Kenney will remain as party leader until an interim leader is chosen. The UCP was created in 2017, when the Wildrose Party merged with the Progressive Conservative Party in Alberta.
Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe posted a note to Jason Kenney after the news, saying thank you to his friend Premier Kenney for everything he has done to unite Alberta Conservative voters into a new party, defeating the NDP government and leading Alberta through a very challenging time.
