The Buffalo River Dene Nation in Northwest Saskatchewan has called a State of Emergency because of the recent increase in gang and drug activity in that community. Chief Norma Catarat says recent violence has created a sense of fear. She, and the Federation of Sovereign Indigenous Nations Executive is calling for federal and provincial support.
FSIN Chief Bobby Cameron says there is only so much the BRDN Council can do on their own. He urges the provincial Ministry of Corrections, Policing and Public Safety to provide immediate relief through additional funding for the RCMP, to conduct proactive enforcement. He says, “Our communities are in crisis and they will not go through this alone.”
