The third federal charter flight carrying 319 Ukrainians has arrived in Canada, landing in Halifax. The federal government secured charter flights for those wanting temporary safe haven because of Russia’s attack on Ukraine. A news release from the Government of Canada says the first flight brought 328 Ukrainians to Winnipeg on May 23rd and the second with 306 Ukrainians on board landed in Montreal on the 29th.
Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, Sean Fraser, announced today that Ukrainians and their accompanying family members who are in Canada as part of the Canada-Ukraine Authorization for Emergency Travel (CUAET) program can now apply for transitional financial assistance through a new federal government online portal. It’s a one-time payment of $3,000 per adult and $1,500 per child to help with the immediate needs such as transportation and housing.
The Emergency Travel program was launched mid-March, and it provides Ukrainians and their immediate family of any nationality the opportunity to stay in Canada as temporary residents for up to three years.
