During Thursday’s planning and development committee meeting, city councillors elected to move ahead with the development of an off-leash dog area in Charlottetown Park located behind the Cosmo Civic Centre and one at the Hyde Dog Park in Rosewood.
Lynne Lacroix, the City’s General Manager of Community Services explains a dog is considered small when it weighs 20 pounds or less and is no taller than 16 inches from the shoulder.
The estimated cost to develop the two small dog parks is at $95,000. The dog parks becoming a reality is pending City Council approval.
Lacroix says the need has been identified in the community for a number of years for small dog owners to be able to take their pet to a dog park and not have to worry about larger dogs being present.
The City is looking to allocate one acre in Charlottetown Park for small dogs and half an acre in Hyde Park.
