The president of the Saskatchewan Urban Municipalities Association (SUMA) isn’t sure how many Ukrainian refugees will be relocated to communities like Saskatoon, Regina, or Yorkton.
A humanitarian flight organized by the provincial government is scheduled to arrive in Regina from Warsaw, Poland on July 4, carrying 230 Ukrainians – mostly women, children and the elderly. Randy Goulden was on a Zoom meeting Monday with government officials, and said they’re gathering more information.
In the meantime, Goulden encourages municipalities and residents to ensure local organizations, such as food banks, housing authorities, and settlement agencies, have the resources needed to help refugees integrate into the province.
People looking to help can also register with the Ukrainian Canadian Congress of Saskatchewan, which has launched a registration process for individuals, businesses and organizations. A media release from SUMA says an additional 800 Ukrainians have already arrived in Saskatchewan through domestic travel.
