The Chief of Zagime Anishinabek, formerly known as Sakimay First Nation, along with the federal Minister of Crown-Indigenous Relations, and the provincial Minister Responsible for First Nation, Metis and Northern Affairs have negotiated a tripartite settlement agreement regarding the First Nation’s Treaty Land Entitlement Claim. The claims address land shortfalls where First Nations to get as much land as was promised them under Treaty.
A news release from the province says there was a shortfall in the land given to this First Nation at the time of signing on to Treaty 4 of 2,859 acres, so the compensation is $20.5-million. Canada will pay $14.5-million and Saskatchewan will pay the remaining $5.8-million. The news release says the settlement will support Zagime Anishinabek in adding up to 18,620 acres of land to reserve.
The provincial and federal governments have also agreed to set aside a total of $3.1-million as compensation to rural municipalities and school divisions, once taxable land is set apart as reserve. The First Nation is in the southeast corner of the province.
