The City of Saskatoon believes the water main break that flooded a roadway in north Saskatoon Tuesday was caused by a vehicle colliding with a fire hydrant.
City officials say when the hydrant was sheared off around 2 p.m. yesterday afternoon, it caused significant flooding at the intersection which undermined the roadway and water pipes.
They say they have to do the road excavation and get down to the pipe to see what in the water main may have been damaged.
The situation caused a water outage for the Provincial Correctional Centre and several businesses located near the intersection. An emergency water supply was provided for the Correctional Centre and had water service restored around 8 p.m that night. Currently, the addresses affected are under a Drinking Water Advisory.
As yet, the city describes the area where social media showed a car stuck, as a cratered roadway but not a sink hole.
And overnight, another truck ignored barriers and got stuck in that washout crater.
The city stresses that if you see a flooded roadway, don’t drive through and don’t go around barriers set up to protect residents from potential risks.
As crews continue repair work the intersection will remain closed and a detour will be in place.
