Horse racing is coming back to Saskatchewan and for the first time in Canadian history we will see Thoroughbred horses run on a track that is on First Nations land.
The Moosomin Downs and Entertainment Limited partnership (MD&E) will be building a track on a 1000 acre lot located near the Saskatoon Airport.
Moosomin Downs & Entertainment Limited Partnership had previously announced it would build a horse track in the RM of Corman Park to replace Marquis Downs which is being phased out.
MD&E says it has secured a Thoroughbred racetrack operator license from the Saskatchewan Liquor and Gaming Authority (SLGA) and starting August 27th there will be ten days of Thoroughbred racing at Marquis Downs..
The racing will wrap up on the weekend of September 25th with the Elite Indian Relay Championships and the FSIN Chief’s Mile Race. The planned 2022 Thoroughbred race meet will cater to traditional horse racing betting products to Saskatchewan’s home market.
Organizers say after this year’s inaugural race meet Moosomin Downs & Entertainment intends to break the ground on its new venue in the RM of Corman Park.
The goal is to have the new track prepared for the 2023 racing season. They will be taking the dirt from the track at Marquis Downs.
