City administration will ask for approval today, at the Saskatoon City Council meeting, to apply for funding from the Provincial Disaster Assistance Program.
There was a significant rainfall event on June 20th which resulted in flooding and led to property damage for homeowners.
The City wants to submit a Request for Designation to the Province to designate the City of Saskatoon as an Eligible Assistance Area.
By receiving the designation the City becomes eligible to receive financial assistance for restoring essential services and property as a result of substantial damages caused by excessive rain which occurred on June 20.
The Province of Saskatchewan has a Provincial Disaster Assistance Program (PDAP) which covers uninsurable damage to individual properties caused by severe weather events. It is the Administration’s understanding that damage caused by excessive amounts of rain would qualify. The minimum criterion for a declaration is one claim of $5,000.00 or several smaller claims totalling $25,000.00. Based on calls received by the city to date, from residents who were impacted, Saskatoon has met the requirements.
If Saskatoon gets the designation, the Province will arrange for the claims to be adjusted and make payments where appropriate. The required application forms will be available online through the Province and will be available at City Hall.
