SGI’s August traffic spotlight is called “When you drive, just drive”.
The insurance company says scrolling through and posting on your social media channels is not a priority when you’re driving, and in fact it’s not even an option.
Offenders face a $580 ticket and four demerits for either holding, using, manipulating or viewing a cell phone or driving without due care and attention.
Those who repeat an offence within one year will be hit with significantly higher ticket costs. That being $1400 for the second ticket and $2100 for the third along with seven-day vehicle impoundments.
SGI says no Instagram reel could possibly worth that.
Over the last five years, an average of 780 people were injured each year in collisions caused by distracted drivers on Saskatchewan roads. That breaks down to one out of every five auto vehicle injuries.
Distracted driving also results in an average of 21.6 fatalities every year in Saskatchewan.
