Saskatoon’s Fire Department was called out at 10:43 p.m. Sunday night to the 200 block of Elm Street after a neighbour heard an alarm sounding at a nearby property and didn’t know if anyone was home.
There was no visible smoke at the house when firefighters arrived in the Exhibition neighbourhood. However, they forced entry through the front door because smoke could be seen inside the house.
A fire was located at the top of a stairwell to the basement and had caused thick smoke conditions. The fire was quickly put out and a female occupant was rescued from one of the home’s bedrooms. She was taken to hospital by Medavie Ambulance Service suffering from smoke inhalation.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation but damage is estimated, to the flooring, at $1,000. Fire officials say that a quick call by a neighbour as soon as they heard the alarm helped minimize property damage.
