Saskatoon’s Roxy Theatre could still be designated as a Municipal Heritage Property. A report to the City’s planning and development committee states that staff have been in contact with the owner on two separate occasions since March asking if a Municipal Heritage Property designation would be something he would be interested in pursuing. The owner, Tom Hutchinson, wants to sell the property, but doesn’t want it torn down.
During the second discussion in early July, Hutchinson said he was interested in pursuing a heritage designation, but he is hesitant because it doesn’t provide ongoing funding for long-term preservation.
Mayor Charlie Clark questioned whether there had been discussions with other levels of government for heritage funding possibilities. Lynne Lacroix, General Manager of Community Services, replied saying. “I’m not sure if we’ve had those direct conversations about seeking out potential grants or support but we absolutely can do that. What we’ve indicated in the report, is that we can absolutely stay in contact with the owner.”
The 92-year-old theatre is one of five atmospheric theatres left standing in the country.
