Provincial NDP leader Carla Beck believes human rights for children need to be better protected by having funding provisions in writing.
“There is a reasonable expectation that children in this province have their basic human rights respected, and one of the ways that the government can ensure this is to tie that public funding to an agreement,” Beck said Tuesday in front of the provincial cabinet office in Saskatoon.
The provincial Children and Youth Advocate will investigate allegations of abuse made by former students of Legacy Christian Academy in a multi-million dollar class action lawsuit.
Earlier this month, Saskatchewan Education Minister Duncan announced additional oversight measures at independent schools. Supervisors were named for three independent schools and one of them had their certification revoked for failing to follow the guidelines.
