Today (Sun) is the first day of National Forest Week, with the theme, Canada’s Forests: Solutions for a Changing Climate.
A news release from the province states that more than half of Saskatchewan is covered in forests and 97 per cent of those are on provincial Crown land which supports a thriving forestry industry.
Energy and Resources Minister Jim Reiter says the forestry industry is a significant employer in the north, and in total supports nearly 8,000 jobs across the province.
Last year, Saskatchewan’s forest products sales exceeded $1.8-billion, a record for the province and more than 60 per cent of forest products are exported globally.
