One inquest will examine the deaths of 11 people, including one of the suspects, Damien Sanderson while a separate inquest will be held for his brother Myles Sanderson. He died in police custody on September 7, while the other deaths and 18 stabbing injuries occurred three days earlier.

Chief Coroner Clive Weighill told reporters that the preliminary autopsy results for Myles Sanderson found no blunt force trauma causing death. He added that in order to determine Sanderson’s cause of death, they still need the toxicology, pathology and neuropathology reports.

Weighill cautions the victims’ families and the public that an inquest is not designed to find fault, it is a hearing to establish the events leading to the deaths.

The six-member inquest jury will consist entirely of Indigenous persons. Weighill did not announced a date, but said it will likely take place late next spring or early summer once the entire police investigation is complete.
