The federal government has announced almost $370,000 in funding for the Saskatoon Tribal Council to support education and awareness activities related to the legacy of residential schools in Saskatchewan. A news release from the Ministry of Crown-Indigenous Relations and Northern Affairs says the locating of unmarked burials at formal residential school sites across Canada is a tragic reminder of the abuse that many Indigenous children suffered in these institutions. The STC, in partnership with the City of Saskatoon, will continue to host educational and awareness activities on topics including reconciliation and the legacy of residential schools. The STC is also working on a memorial garden.
Tribal Chief Mark Arcand says, “Education is the key to understanding the truth and the devastating legacy of residential schools.” He encourages Canadians to learn and participate in awareness events as an important step towards building a reconciled country for all.
