Regina Police have more details on the incident where a police dog was bear-sprayed
It happened shortly before 6 p.m. on Saturday when an officer with the Canine Unit saw a man they felt was acting suspiciously and attempted to speak with him. This was in the area of 5th Avenue and Angus Street and the officer saw what appeared to be a weapon in the man’s backpack which is when the suspect allegedly pointed a can of bear mace in the direction of the officer and fled on foot.
The suspect was tracked down a short distance away and police say he refused multiple times to comply when asked to stop and put down the bear mace. A Police Service Dog was sent in and the dog was repeatedly sprayed with bear mace. The dog maintained contact with the suspect biting his arm which is when the officer deployed their Conducted Energy Weapon, twice.
Police allege that the suspect was wearing body armour and they located a machete, a baton, a large quantity illicit drugs and cash in the suspect’s backpack.
