Environment Canada meteorologist Terri Lang says Autumn in Saskatchewan is a windy time of year, and it hasn’t been windy this fall.
Lang says the wind is generated by the struggle between the cold air in the north and warm air in the south with the jet stream moving back and forth so the wind this week is no surprise and wind warnings will continue for the southeast for the balance of today.
She also says, because of the wind, residents in southern Saskatchewan need to be careful due to reduced visibility. The salt from dried up alkali lakes was blowing so much Wednesday it was visible in satellite imagery, and between that as well as dust and the grass fires down around Weyburn, it can limit what motorists can see.
The strongest wind gust in the province Wednesday was Estevan at 104 km/h. Regina saw winds gust to 81 while Weyburn, Assiniboia and Coronach saw a peak wind gust out of the northwest at 87. Saskatoon saw a peak wind gust of 78 kilometres per hour.
