The Saskatoon Fire Department responded to a 4-storey multi-unit housing complex in the 900 block of Main Street at 5 a.m. Saturday when a caller said alarms were sounding on two floors, but they were unsure what the alarm was for. It was carbon monoxide alarms that were ringing. Everyone was evacuated and natural gas service to the building was shut off as a precaution.
The Fire Department says readings reach as high as 170 parts per million on the second level. A Transit bus was brought in to keep everyone safe while fire and utility crews continued the investigation. SaskEnergy determined the source of the carbon monoxide was the boiler system. It was fixed and service restored. About two hours after this all began occupants were allowed to return to their suites.
