From today (Tuesday) through till October 31st next year, a new pilot program will test-drive free parking for Saskatchewan Veterans with registered Veteran plates that have been issued by SGI.
It will allow them to park free of charge in Saskatoon’s pay parking zones within the posted time limits and brings Saskatoon in line with other communities in Saskatchewan. The reason it is a pilot is so the City of Saskatoon can determine the impact it has on parking supply, turnover in pay parking zones and undoubtedly revenue.
City Administration and City Council will review the program after October 31, 2023.
Most jurisdictions who have a veteran parking program simply recognize an SGI issued license plate. Prior to this pilot program the City of Saskatoon demanded that the veteran plate had to be registered to within 30 kilometres of Saskatoon and had to prove they served overseas in WWI, WWII, Korea during the Korean War as a member of the Canadian Forces; as a member of an allied force; or in the Merchant Navy, Ferry Command or United Nations Peacekeeping.
