It is the first big storm of the season for central and northern Saskatchewan. Meteorologist Terri Lang says it’s all because of an Alberta Clipper and it is a complicated system. “We’re going to get rain, then freezing rain, then snow on top of that and then a bunch of wind and then the roads are going to ice up. So, there’s a whole bunch of things coming together.”
Lang says further north, they know because of the trees, there won’t be as much blowing snow, but snow will still fall. And further south there may not be as much snow but there will be a lot of wind. She says first the rain will make roads quite wet, then all of sudden the northwesterly winds will come in behind the clipper and temperatures will drop quickly, the snow will start to fall and because of the wind there will be blowing and drifting snow so the roads will ice up very quickly.
Lang describes it as a very “classic clipper” which tends to move fast and tends to not get big accumulations of snow. Lang says the effects of this weather system will involve everything from reduced visibility to icy roads and possibly wind and ice impacting power lines. She expects the weather will truly ease for the entire province on Sunday afternoon.
