According to the provincial NDP, there are 3,000 vacant Saskatchewan Housing units across the province.
NDP Leader Carla Beck calls it a ”mismanagement” of housing stock during a time when people are struggling to find shelter. She wants a plan to make the units more accessible.
Meantime, the NDP claims the homeless situation is putting additional pressure on already overburdened hospital emergency rooms. It quotes official documents as reporting in excess of 1,200 visits to Saskatchewan emergency rooms for cold weather injuries over the last three years.
