The Government of Saskatchewan introduced legislation today that will potentially suspend government benefits like income support and social housing to offenders with outstanding warrants.

The province says there is similar legislation in B.C. and Manitoba.

If passed in the Legislature, a Warrant Intelligence Team would work with other government agencies to suspend benefits to, and collect information on, prolific violent offenders with active warrants.

Minister responsible Christine Tell says, “Following events in James Smith Cree Nation and Weldon, it is imperative that we enhance our ability to collect information on violent offenders with outstanding warrants.”

The goal the government says is to not have taxpayer dollars being used to fund criminal lifestyles and activities. The Warrant Intelligence Team is expected to be operational in fiscal 2023-24.

It will also reportedly work with Social Services so families of offenders aren’t unduly impacted.
