The Saskatoon Fire Department was called out to a condominium fire in the city’s Lakeview neighbourhood at 5:11 a.m. Sunday morning after receiving a report a male trapped by fire in a bedroom on the ground floor of a building in the 800 block of Kingsmere Boulevard.
When crews arrived, they saw flames coming from a window of a ground floor suite and at that time the male trapped inside had escaped through the bedroom window. He was treated for unknown injuries by paramedics with Medavie Health Services West.
There are 28 suites in the building and a fire crew was brought in to evacuate. The smoke alarm in the affected suite was ringing as was a full alarm alerting all occupants.
The fire was brought under control in 30 minutes.
Residents were allowed to return shortly before 6:30 a.m. and a fire investigator has determined that the fire is arson. It was deliberately set in the hallway of the suite where the male had been trapped inside a bedroom.
Damage is estimated at $35,000. Saskatoon Police are investigating.
